How does it work? The G2RT looks like a toilet from the front, but the back of the unit has much more in store than the typical flush.

  • After flushing, liquid and solid waste are treated using “volume reduction” technology.
  • Feces are pasteurized to kill pathogens.
  • A filter then presses and squeezes excess moisture out to create small, odorless, pathogen-free, and compostable “cakes.”
  • The cakes get emptied every few days.
  • Urine is filtered and recycled for future flushing.

Who’s it for? This toilet is designed for wipers who use toilet paper and washers who use water to cleanse. The unit is also available as a pedestal toilet (seen here) or a squat toilet.

Who created it? More than 95 scientists, engineers, and designers, led by Dr. Shannon Yee at the Georgia Institute of Technology, collaborated to produce this toilet. Engineering and industrial design teams include the Georgia Tech Research Institute, EOOS NEXT, and Helbling Technik.
